El món de les notícies està canviant ràpidament amb la generalització d'Internet com a vehicle d'accés a la informació i amb l'aparició de la premsa urbana gratuïta. En aquest marc, el periodisme científic té serioses dificultats per no caure en una banalització dels continguts, per la falta de contextualització i la creixent trivialització dels fets noticiables, que s'estan convertint en un mer producte de consum. Els grans grups editorials afronten amb serioses dificultats aquest important canvi en la forma tradicional de difondre les notícies per mediació de la premsa escrita, ràdio i televisió. Internet possibilita el by-pass del periodisme convencional, que tendeix a convertir-se en un proveïdor de continguts, mentre que el públic, convertit en mer consumidor, ha de desenvolupar les seves potencialitats de discerniment i de crítica per poder accedir a una informació independent de qualitat.The world of news is changing rapidly with the appearance of free urban press and, above all, with the gradual generalisation of the Internet as a means of access to the information. In this situation, scientific journalism faces serious difficulties in preventing its content from becoming banal due to the lack of contextualisation and an increasing trivialization of newsworthy facts, which are becoming a mere consumer product. The big publishing groups have trouble facing this sea of changes in the traditional diffusion of news by the press, radio and television. The Internet makes it possible to by-pass conventional journalism, which tends to become a content supplier, while the public becomes a mere consumer and must develop its own discernment and critical skills in order to access to a high-quality and independent information

Mere Anarchy is the name of Woody Allen’s latest book in which the film director cultivates the genre of critical stories —farces perhaps?— about the world around us, as he did years ago in, for example, Without Feathers or in Getting even. One of the 18 stories in this book is dedicated to science and its popularization. It is entitled “Strung Out” in reference to the physics of strings. This title of the intelligent New York filmmaker serves as a metaphor to analyze whether journalism and, in general, the popularization of science “stretches the string too far” and tends to banalize knowledge.
